We want to let you in on our secret addiction, for no other reason than to make sure you too have some quality couch time this weekend. Watching dance movies (sometimes back-to-back) is incredibly inspiring and uplifting. There’s something special about watching people break into dance to show their feelings, or even just show off their talents – often to great soundtracks.

There are so many movies about dancing which showcase a variety of different styles and genres. Here are our top 12 best dance movies of all time (for everyone to argue over), although it was hard to pick with so many incredible choices. Feel free to comment with your favourite one. 12. Save The Last Dance (2001)

A young girl tries to get in to a top dance school, but to do this she needs to get some inspiration and some fresh moves. It’s like Romeo and Juliet but with more dancing and less death.

A romantic comedy (starring Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez) where a bored, overworked Estate Lawyer signs up for ballroom dancing lessons upon first sight of a beautiful instructor.

 

10. Honey (2003)

You’ve got early, vintage Jessica Alba as an up and coming music video choreographer, teaching some sassy, young kids how to dance.

 

9. Black Swan (2010)

Natalie Portman portrays a ballet dancer who wins the lead in “Swan Lake”. She is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan – Princess Odette, but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

 

8. Take The Lead (2006)

Antonio Banderas, a ballroom teacher decides to bring his dance expertise to the population of problem kids from rough backgrounds in his local council high school.

 

7. Flashdance (1983)

Jennifer Beale stars as a Pittsburgh woman with two jobs as a welder and an exotic dancer wants to get into a top ballet school. You just don’t see that plot line enough these days.

A champion dancer risks his career by performing an unusual routine and sets out to succeed with a new partner. This will take you back to a time when Paul Mercurio was in his prime.

 

3. Footloose (1984 original)

Kevin Bacon saves an entire town from oppression with the power of dance. A city teenager moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace. This movie is a classic and must be watched.

 

2. Singing In The Rain (1952)

A classic must-watch movie starring the famous Gene Kelly. The movie is about a silent film production company and cast who make a difficult transition to sound.

 

1. Dirty Dancing (1987)

It’s the movie that features arguably the single most important dance move in history: That Lift. Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).

 

Honourable Mention: Magic Mike (2012)

A male stripper teaches a younger performer how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.
